Zimbabwe was allocated a stand at a prime location at the Expo 2020 in Dubai where it is set to participate in October next year, the Government has revealed.

The Office of the President and Cabinet (OPC) confirmed in a request for proposals notice published this week that the country would be participating in the six-month universal exposition. The Office indicated that it was looking for architectural and design services for the country’s pavilion at the exposition.

“Zimbabwe is one of the countries that will be participating at the upcoming Expo 2020 in Dubai (in the United Arab Emirates) which will run from the 1st of October 2021 to 31st of March 2022 under the theme, ‘Connecting minds, Creating the Future,’ ” read part of the notice.

“Zimbabwe has been allocated an exhibition pavilion in the thematic opportunities district at a location whose proximity to the main dome and the UAE (pavilion) makes it one of the highest traffic pavilions which will attract the attention of the projected 15 million visitors over this period,” said the OPC.

Meanwhile, in a similar notice, the OPC indicated that it was looking for media agencies to profile Zimbabwean children’s books, games and activities as part of its preparations for the global exhibition.

Expo 2020 was initially pencilled to run from 20 October 2020 to 10 April 2021 but was postponed to a year later due to the coronavirus pandemic. The organisers of the event decided to keep the name Expo 2020 for marketing and branding purposes. It is also alternatively known as Expo 2020 Dubai to emphasise the host city.

This is the first time that the expo has been postponed since the first such event took place in London in 1851. The UAE was chosen as the host of the event by the Bureau International des Expositions (BIE) general assembly in Paris on 27 November 2013.
